Corporate Tax in UAE for Distribution of Medical Supplies

Corporate Tax in the UAE applies to companies engaged in the import, export, wholesale, or retail distribution of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other healthcare supplies, the same as it applies to any other business activity. What genuinely differs for this sector isn’t the Corporate Tax treatment itself, but the VAT treatment layered on top of it, since medical supplies carry specific VAT rules that most other distributed goods don’t.

This guide covers the applicable Corporate Tax rate, VAT treatment specific to medical supplies, a worked example combining both, and compliance requirements for distributors in this sector.

Corporate Tax Rate for Medical Supply Distributors

Medical supply distribution businesses are subject to the standard UAE Corporate Tax rate structure under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022: 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000, and 9% on taxable income above that threshold. There’s no special reduced rate or dedicated incentive regime specifically for the healthcare distribution sector, R&D and other business costs remain deductible under the ordinary deductible expenditure rules that apply to any UAE business, not under a special healthcare-specific credit.

VAT Treatment of Medical Supplies: The Genuinely Distinct Consideration

This is where medical supply distribution actually differs meaningfully from most other distribution businesses. Certain medicines and medical equipment specified under UAE VAT regulations qualify for zero-rating, meaning VAT applies at 0% rather than the standard 5%, provided the specific product is registered and listed as qualifying with the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention. Not every healthcare-related product automatically qualifies, general wellness products, cosmetics, and items outside the specifically registered and approved list are generally standard-rated at 5% like most other goods. A distributor handling a mixed portfolio, some zero-rated registered medicines and devices, alongside other standard-rated healthcare or wellness products, needs to apply VAT correctly on a product-by-product basis rather than assuming the entire portfolio qualifies for zero-rating.

Worked Example: Corporate Tax and VAT for a Medical Distributor

A distributor generates AED 6,000,000 in annual taxable profit, selling a mix of registered zero-rated medications (AED 4,000,000 in revenue) and general wellness products that are standard-rated (AED 2,000,000 in revenue). For Corporate Tax purposes, the AED 6,000,000 taxable profit is taxed the same way regardless of the VAT treatment of the underlying sales: 0% on the first AED 375,000, 9% on the remaining AED 5,625,000, giving Corporate Tax payable of AED 506,250. On the VAT side, the distributor charges no VAT on the AED 4,000,000 in zero-rated medication sales, but charges 5% VAT on the AED 2,000,000 in wellness product sales, AED 100,000 in output VAT collected and remitted. Corporate Tax and VAT operate as entirely separate calculations here, the VAT zero-rating on medications has no bearing on how the underlying profit is taxed for Corporate Tax purposes.

Compliance and Reporting Requirements

Companies distributing medical supplies must maintain accurate financial records and submit Corporate Tax returns within 9 months of the relevant tax period’s end, consistent with standard UAE Corporate Tax filing requirements. Where the business also handles VAT-zero-rated products, maintaining clear product-level records distinguishing zero-rated from standard-rated sales is essential, both for accurate VAT return filing and to support the zero-rating treatment if reviewed by the FTA. Businesses above AED 50,000,000 in revenue, or otherwise falling within Ministerial Decision No. 84 of 2025’s mandatory audit scope, also need audited financial statements alongside their Corporate Tax filing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is there a special Corporate Tax rate for medical supply distributors in the UAE?

No. Medical supply distributors are subject to the same standard rate as any other business: 0% up to AED 375,000 in taxable income, 9% above that threshold.

Are all medical products zero-rated for VAT in the UAE?

No. Only specific medicines and medical equipment registered and listed as qualifying with the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention are zero-rated. General wellness products and unregistered items are generally standard-rated at 5%.

Does VAT zero-rating on medicines affect how Corporate Tax is calculated?

No. Corporate Tax and VAT are separate calculations, VAT zero-rating on qualifying medical products has no bearing on how the underlying taxable profit is assessed for Corporate Tax purposes.

Is there a special R&D tax incentive for UAE healthcare companies?

Not a dedicated healthcare-specific incentive. R&D and other genuine business costs remain deductible under the standard deductible expenditure rules that apply to any UAE business.

What records should a medical distributor maintain for VAT purposes?

Clear, product-level records distinguishing zero-rated registered medical products from standard-rated items, supporting accurate VAT return filing and defending the zero-rating treatment if reviewed by the FTA.

Do medical supply distributors need an audited financial statement?

Where revenue exceeds AED 50,000,000, or the business otherwise falls within Ministerial Decision No. 84 of 2025’s mandatory audit scope, yes, audited financial statements are required alongside the Corporate Tax filing.
